Royally yours, Tui

Tui Slater’s piece Land is Permanent, Man Disappears (detail above) is showing at Letham Gallery’s exhibition Royally Yours until April 9.

Follow the thumbnail image below to see a small portfolio of Tui’s art that I have recently photographed. For more of Tui’s work visit her website: www.tuislater.com. Among the wall art and sculptural pieces, she also creates beautiful bone and metalwork jewellery that is eminently wearable but carries a tongue-in-cheek comment on what it is to be a female and also kiwi.

She’ll be right, eh.

Learn to Sail: Bay of Islands Yacht Club

Every Sunday morning, come rain or shine (though we prefer shine), parents and volunteers take their children out on the water, teaching them the basics of sailing in Optimist dinghies. Several of the parents have taken coaching courses – you don’t have to be an amazing sailor to be able to teach the right techniques. The photo below shows the last race of the day – it’s the parents turn to take the helm! Click on photo thumbnail below to see more. Each day ends with a sausage sizzle, $2 a sausage, to help raise funds for junior sailing.  The Bay of Islands Yacht Club is always looking for funding opportunities to improve the quality of the fleet, to maximise the number of safety boats on the water and to make sure we can keep on providing affordable sailing to the Bay of Islands community and excellent facilities for boaties throughout the area.

Follow our Facebook page for Learn to Sail or keep an eye on the Bay of Islands Yacht Club website for more information about club activities.

Taste Bay of Islands

If you’ve got a product that appeals to the senses, there is no better way to promote it than this – simply let it speak for itself. Allow people to taste it, smell it, feel it. Chances are (if it’s good) once they’ve engaged with it, they’ll want more of it. Defences are won over, and easy as anything you’ve made an honest sale.

Taste Bay of Islands is a brilliant yearly event in the Bay where local producers rock up with their stalls and sell their products at great prices. Cheese, wine, citrus products, coffee, oysters, mushrooms…and the list goes on. They’ll let you try for free, no obligation to buy. But buy you will. It’s impossible not to because this really is feelgood shopping – supporting local industry, local endeavour and hanging out with friends sharing lunch cooked by local chefs, sampling the wine of Northland vineyards.

I’ll be there with bells on.
